My latest project...

Post by mizike77 »

Today I picked up a 78 900GTS that I have been after for a couple years now. 37K miles and a few fried wires in the harness but other than missing an ignition its fairly complete. It is quite different than my Darmah in the electrical dept. This bike is fitted with a Lucas electronic ignition wich I know nothing about. It also has a single coil with both leads comong out? Koni shocks, air forks, drilled rotors, braided lines,an aluminium rear DID rim and Contis. The Contis are 2 different ones. One apears to be older than the other. The egine and frame numbers are the same, wich isnt the case on my SD. 854260 DM860 I will post some pics, give me your thoughts on what isnt correct and such. It also has an aluminium tank. Not sure if the dash is right either. Can anyone tell me what these contis are from? You can see the numbers clearly in the photos.

It looks as if you've gotten the beginnings of many many hours of work ahead of you. The ign. is a Lucas Rita and is an ok system but the pickups sometimes fall apart. The single coil is an Accell and is good quality and reliable. It is a wasted spark system and fires both plugs at the same time. The Contis are of different production runs, price some new ones and you will likely accept the differences. The dash looks correct and was also used on the 500 GTLs of that year. The ign. switch is available from Steve. Some powder coating, paint a few tens of gallons of rust dissolver,a little plating and polishing and you'll have a nice addition to your stable.Hope the engine internals are in good shape.

Hi. I acquired a 1979 900GTS last year and have been restoring it to it's original glory. Hopefully it will be back on the road next month.

The dash on yours is exactly the same as mine. The early ones had a switch for the horn (city/country) on them but this is the correct one for the bike you have. I ended up rebuilding the circuit board behind the dash as most of the LED's did not work. If you have the same problem feel free to contact me for any advice.

The tank looks identical to mine too

Look forward to seeing pictures of it once it is restored

UPDATE... with my Darmah down and out, I decided to give the GTS a good cleaning and address the minor issues so that I had something classic to ride for the rest of the season. ( I dont trust my H2 for any distance trips). Cleaned up the wiring, cleaned the carbs and petcocks, bought a battery , fork seals and master cylinder rebuild kit. This bike runs great! E start works perfectly and she fires and idles nicley. I will ride it this season and see how it treats me, then over the winter may splurge for some paint and wheels...
