eliminating a battery from a single cylinder ducati 350

hello
i recently purchased a 1970 350 ducati scrambler. it has an original 6 volt wiring system. i heard you can eliminate the battery by buying a couple of electrical components, but i dont know what they are specifically or how i would hook them up. Also, i need a spedometer cable for this bike, do you know where i could get one. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thank you
