Need info on 350 Ducati

Post by villa211 »

Hello, Need some help on a new machine I picked up. Here's a picture. Engine # DM350 02322. No frame tag or #.
Was told this is a 250 frame with a 350 engine.
Would like to know what year the frame and or engine is?
How many where made?
Any help is much appreciated.
Scott

Hi Scott and welcome to the Forum,

The basis of the bike is a Scrambler, a 250cc model first produced as 4-speed in 1964 and then continued with the 5-speed engine into 1967.

As to the engine, Ian Falloon writes, "According to production data for 1965 and 1966, also included was a 350 Scrambler (these may have been Scramblers fitted with 350 Sebring motors)". However, I'm not aware of any other author (e.g Mick Walker or Tom Bailey) claiming the existence of a 350 narrow-case Scrambler. And I note how guarded Ian is with his wording :) - "according to production data", "may have been".

As to the Sebring, it was made 1965-67. Again according to Ian Falloon, Sebring engine numbers start 01001, with +/- 1,000 being made each year. Which would make your engine from some time early-mid 1966.

As to the frame, there is a way to date this, assuming the forks are original. On the inner face of the lug that supports the brake plate, there is a code stamped. Up until 1965, this appears as first the week, then the year, e.g. 27 64. After 1965, it's the month and then the year, e.g 7 66.

Also in 1996, the rear wheel got smaller: 18" in place of 19".

Smart bike, especially when finished in black and silver. Go http://www.motoscrubs.com/forum/viewtop ... f=3&t=2538

Crag, Thank you for the great info. That helps a lot. I did pull the front wheel off and the brake lug has 9-65 on it. It also has a 18" rear wheel. It runs good. Very loud, there's no baffle in the pipe. Someone put a large AMAL carb on it and looks to have some port work done to the head. Thanks again.
