Need 500GTL rings?

Post by izaakb »

I am rebuilding the top end of my 500 GTL and am replacing rings. If anyone is interested in a group buy, or just getting a set when I find them, let me know (email me thru the site).

thx

I just went to a machine shop, they measured the old rings and bought new ones for it.

I think they're alfa romeo rings but I'm not sure.

just finished a top end rebuilt of my 500 gtl this summer, had a blast doing it. make sure you get the right gasket kit from Steve, also there are no O-rings between the cylinders and head like the book incorrectly shows.

no he doesn't list the gasket kit. steve will special order it from Athena for you. If you just need a few gaskets, let me know, since I have some extras. But you'll definitely need a head gasket, of which I don't have an extra.

I actually have the 2 extra sets of the rings, since they were for a 4 cylinder alfa romeo. I can sell you the extra two for what they cost me ($50 bucks), since they're just sitting around. just PM me. I think I have 4 extra valve seals as well. The book says replace the cylinder liners, but mine looked fine and I didn't want to mess with that.

I think I get 125 psi compression in each cylinder with them, so they work fine.

What else.... When you drop the engine to get the head off, you don't need to take it completely off. Just unscrew the front attachment from the frame with a hydraulic jack under it, loosen the other frame attachments and pivot the engine down a few inches. Then you can take the head off, raise the crankcase back up and reattach to the frame. Saves lots of time to do this way.

I know I'm late on this thread, but I would be interested in the extra rings you have for my 500's pistons. Also, you state that there are no o-rings between the head and cylinder. Ducati made a change and on my '78 500 Desmo there ARE o-rings. A different head gasket is needed that has larger holes at the oil spigots for clearance so the o-rings seat directly on the cylinder and not on the gasket. Please email me directly.
