1978 ducati 500 gtl

Post by spmcgowan03 »

Hi, I was wondering if anybody knows anything about the'78 ducati 500 gtl.
I already put a deposit down on one that I found on ebay, but now I am hearing that there has been a problem with these bikes. The guy that I talked to said that the oil system was not fully functional and that oil would not make it to the engine causing a lot of these bikes to blow their engines. It was then said that word got out on these bikes and people just were not buying them anymore. With that said, the bike that I found has been crated and unused its whole life up until now, that is if I buy it. I have seen pictures of the bike and its a beauty and definitely a collectors piece, but its gonna be my first bike so I want something that is fully functional as well, not just a museum piece. I was told by the people at sbduc.com that you guys are the pros on anything ducati, especially steve.Somebody please help me?

The problem with the early p/twin pump was to much end float on the gears
so you need to check end clearance & machine the body if necessary.

paralized twin

Post by BevHevSteve »

Hey man, Unfortunately I am no "expert" on the GTL 'paralized' twins

See the joke made on these beauties! You are correct though, there are problems with them I have heard, but, once everything has been checked out and brought to spec, they are fun fun fun. I have some customers who have these bikes - they ride them - they say they are BIG fun!

 Afterall, they are a Ducati doncha know.

Sounds like you have a brand new one then? Do I understand that right? wow. That is kewl babee. Worth taking care of. If this is a first bike, you may want to go buy a ninja 250 or kawi 500 twin or somthing cheap and light to learn to ride with so that you can take your time to go through the motor. :Then you will also have the benefit of knowing how to ride so you won;t drop your Duc.....

By the way, I can get full gasket & seal sets for your motor so that you can feel free to go through it and not have to worry about re using gaskets that may or may not be OK to use a 2nd time.

I got an earlier email message from you, sorry I didn;t respond, I have been_REALLY_busy and can barely keep up with everything these daze.... not enough hours in the day my friend. Anyways, by now you have your bike, hopefully you have a plan of attack by now?

I have all the manuals posted on my site for you to print out etc, go to the 'manuals index' to find them. Good luck and have fun!

Hi Steve, I see on this thread that you may have gasket kits for a GTL 500? it's a long shot seeing it a very old post but If you still have a set, how much and how much for postage to Sydney Australia.
Cheers
