Shock mounting

Post by MartinMille BANNED »

I noticed on some bikes in the gallery including my bike, have the shocks what I would call mounted upside-down , is there any benefit for doing this or is it just personal preference thing ?

It depends on the shock. Gas shocks can often be mounted upside-down, the older oil-filled shocks must be placed right-side up.

The piggy back Mazs only fit one way in my experience, and the technical reason is one end is lighter than the other and that is mounted on the swingarm to reduce unsprung weight, the less weight incorporated in the wheels and suspension allows it to follow the ground easier, less momentum, the reports of fitting carbon wheels on late model bikes bear this out,eg major improvement in performance.
