To the League of Fine Gentlemen:

Like most old bikes, my 1975 860GT requires getting rid of the rust that has accrued in the tank.

I have read several online clips (none here that I have seen, and I have searched here...) touting the positive aspects of the product, "Metal Rescue", its absence of acid which can harm a painted finish, and environmental friendliness.

I plan to use Metal Rescue on my tank, and will report here eventually on its results.

If anyone has a caution on not using it, I will be grateful; I don't think that will be the case.

If anyone has a different product recommendation, I will also be open to that suggestion.

This is what I use on literally every bike I have owned with a steel tank. The current 5 gallon bucket I have of it now has shined up about 6 tanks with great success.

Second question:

Then, do you coat the inside of the tank with a rust preventive, as for example KBS brand sealer? I see a lot of posts on that, both positive and negative, but do see the merit in the process, as it should prevent a recurrence of the rust.

That's a dilemma for me, since my bike will not be ready to ride for quite some time, and the tank will be off the bike. It's a bit heavy to lug on and off the bike when full of fuel, so I guess that I will wait for a more opportune time, closer to re-launching the bike onto the road before de-rusting it. This Florida climate is very pervasive when it comes to corrosion; I am constantly dealing with corrosion on parts that sit in my garage; it will most likely get into the tank unless I seal the openings. Maybe I will de-rust anyway, seal the openings, and revisit the de-rusting later on if necessary.

I am guessing by your reply here that you do not advocate using tank sealer.

I'd de-rust now, then spray some engine fogging oil inside or WD-40. Seal it up and you will be good to wait.
