76 750ss wheel hub finish

Post by rick65 »

Can anyone tell me what is polished besides the wheel rim & centre of the hub? It might seem a bit tedious but my wheels are in such bad state that it's hard to tell.
Photos included for interest, I'm pretty happy with the way they've come up so far.

On mine and all the others I can recall only the center section of the hubs[between the spokes] were polished, with the drive hub and disc adapters in a natural as cast finish.

Ok, thanks wdietz, that makes it easy then. You don't happen to know of any way of keeping the freshly bead blasted alloy looking fresh do you?
I don't want to go too overboard but the longer I can keep the corrosion away the better.

As posted in the engine section, any personal experiences would be appreciated.

I had my hubs and bearingcarriers blasted, inside hub polished and then anodised.
Trouble is that the high silica content of the cast aluminium turns it to a darker grey after anodising.
Plus : With anodised rims and hubs and stainless spokes, those wheels still stand in perfect condition after 35 years (except for cracking tires).
I don't care about the non originality, just too lazy ;-)

I thought about anodizing the hubs, didn't know about the darkening though. Sure would save a lot of work.
I don't think I could do it my borranis though, well, borrani really, I'm pretty sure the front is beyond help.

I pulled the 4777's apart, cleaned the rims and blasted the hubs.
Then they went away for polishing (the rims) and then everything went into the anodizing bath.
Hubs were a darker grey and the rims were a bit dull (due to the anodizing).
Some MG ss spokes and everything was good for life
Except I overtensioned some spokes and (could be that the heat-treatment caused a change in material) the rims cracked in a few places.
Threw them away and fitted some Akront's and later Campagnolo's.

If You want it to look Original : don't anodise them.
