78 SD rear brake setup

Post by riccorman »

Can anyone give me some guidance on setting up the rear brake on an early SD without interference from the kickstart? Thanks in advance for any and all replies.

There's not much to them. I assume you're talking about interference with the kick start pivot point. Clearance is only about 3mm on mine (see below), but you can't make it touch. It may that your brake lever is bent. The lever often cops it if the bike falls on the RHS. Often it will leave some evidence with some scratches or gouges on the alloy sprocket cover where the foot pad end of the lever sits. (Don't ask me how I know).

Alternatively, if the lever pivot is worn and sloppy, you may need to get the lever re-bushed.

A-HA! Thanks Kev for your reply, and the pic is much appreciated. After reading your post and looking at my bike, my lever is obviously bent. There are several gouges on the sprocket cover, and there is actually one right alongside the toe pad on the lever, as if it was shoved into the sprocket cover. I wonder how difficult it would be to bend it back... it looks like the toe pad needs to be brought out about 15mm. That's a helluva bend.

Thanks again for your reply, Kev. Very much appreciated.

I straightened my original one fine with some heat and it then need rechoming but I had a spare anyway so just put that one on. Musta learned my lesson, cause 25 years later it's still not been chromed! I don't recall how hot I got it though. (It looks to me like my "spare" has probably been straightened at some time too, just looking at my photo)

Well that was easy. A little bit of heat and a couple of good whacks with a hammer and now it works perfectly. About 3 mm clearance from the kickstarter. It only took a wee bit of heat so my chrome is still in good shape, too.

Thanks again Kev
