SD 900 Speedo drive

Post by pilotg »

When I bought the bike (1981 SD900) the speedo drive was not fitted.

I'm in the process of restoring the front wheel and tried to fit the supplied drive only to find that it doesn't appear to be sitting right. See attached link to flikr photos.

I've checked my parts catalogue and the drawing shows only the drive and no spacer so I'm guessing the reason that the drive won't sit flush is that the hole the lug fits into isn't deep enough. A couple of questions therefore need to be asked.

Firstly, why isn't it deep enough?

Secondly, if I make it deep will I be screwing anything up? I don't think it's a major job to make it deeper with the dremel but I'd rather have some input from others who know better than I.

There is also the possibility that the drive is the wrong one but it does look like every other drive I've seen.

The second photo show the hole and it looks like it's been mangled by someone before. This could explain why it wasn't fitted when I got the bike.

I'm trying to get the bike on the road in the next ten days so a quick response would be most welcome.

Many thanks

George
