Using an ST2 stator in squarecase.

Post by big phil »

hi all, has anyone used an ST2 stator in a squarecase? After some searching here found that the round cases accept them but no mention of the square.
Just put a bid on one on ebay but in hindsight it might have been a bit premature.
cheers, phil

Phil, You didn't indicate which square case you have.
Some early 860GTs have the 3 wire 150 watt alternator used on the round case 750GTs. So the rotor would work here.
After around May 1975 the 860GT and moving forward used a 200 watt 2 wire alternator.
The parts manuals use the same part numbers for these as the 750GTs.
The part numbers change for the alternators starting with the Darmahs.
If you get the rotor measure it against yours to check dimensions. If it doesn't fit I'm sure someone here would be interested in it.
The ST2 rotor and the round case rotor are dimensionally almost indentical.
With the 200 watt alternator used on the later square case bikes the charging issues of the round case bikes was pretty much solved.
The original rotors would, by now, be losing most of their magnetic ability and would benefit from an upgrade to rare earth type magnetic rotors.
Hope this helps,
Let us know.
