I wanted to overhaul my starter as I have just had a sprag bearing fail. I could not get the sprocket off the starter motor in order to remove it from the case for strip down. They are keyed on and even minor burrs can make the removal difficult.
I ended up using a tool called a "Toledo Micro Puller". This is a small 3 arm puller designed for sprockets, bearings and gears up to about 45mm. Whilst it was a little expensive the sprocket popped off nicley with no damage and the puller fitted inside the case.
Sure beats grinding off the bottom of the feet from larger pullers in order to make them fit as we have all done in the past!
