What is the most common cause for the Alternator charge light to stay on ?

early ss had gen(erator)which stayed on all the time

We're tallking SSD here, yeh? In which case, immediate thoughts are:

1. Regulator not working
2. Voltmeter not working
3. Alternator not working

Stick a voltmeter across the battery and tell us what happens when you throttle up ...

I will have a better look tomorrow at it all the parts needed are no problems I have spares for all but first things first get the coil pick-up wiring fixed and go from there

Just to add the obvious to Craig's list:

The battery's stuffed. I'd suggest you don't even bother starting a diagnosis until you've eliminated that.
