FWIW the VIN number is the Vehicle Identification Number. In Australia, this number is exactly the same as the frame number. After 1977 ( i.e. from 78 onwards), the VIN tag on bevel SSs was moved from the right side down strut and stuck to the front of the headstock. The VIN tag should also have the build date stamped on it (month/year). From the given engine and frame numbers (and, yes, the frame number should start DM860SS) the bike is consistent with an 82 model. Another way to tell if the bike is an 82, and not an 81, is to look at the fairing. The 81 bikes generally did not have DESMO stickers and the 82 bikes had DESMO stickers with square cornered Es. The fugly seats were also different in that the 81 bikes were notched above the shock mounts and the 82 bikes were not. The 82 bikes generally had fairing braces, like the MHRs, and slightly different front forks. But the engine and frame numbers themselves indicate production towards the very end of the bevel SS life making it a rare duck indeed.
Are you talkin' to me?
