At the risk of being called ignorant (I'm used to it...),
can someone explain to me the migration of some bikes' swing arms to the single-sided ones now seen on BMW's and Ducatis? I am a
fairly technical gearhead, but haven't found anyone who can give me a technical explanation. There is obviously a good reason for this change, but I am still looking for the answer.

I did some machining to help a mate install a Honda Single Sided Swing Arm in a Suzy GSXR frame. Lots of clearance and chain alignment issues. The idea was originally conceived for endurance racing. Like Steve says super fast wheel swaps. I don't think there's any handling advantage. I sure wouldn't do it to my vintage bike. Very popular with Street Fighter builders ........ just for the LOOK.
