Re-covering 750GT seat - how to do the front & back

I've just recovered my seat. When I took off the old cover, the front end was secured to the seatframe by 3 barbs in the seat frame - I assume I'll do that again. But the back was held down by a lot of silicone sealant - which did a good job of rusting the metal. How were they done originally, and why not just hold the back in place with small sheet metal screws and washers?
