Lacquer vs. Urethane

Post by DucMonzter »

I would like to get advice regarding an appropriate type of paint to use for the restoration of a Monza Jr. I'm not referring to paint colors - I'm referring to the paint chemistry.

Since paint and finish quality were of secondary concern to Ducati when the bikes were originally manufactured, I’m trying not to over-restore. I’m well aware of the technical benefits to modern urethanes but am concerned that they won’t look “correct” due to their high-gloss finish. I was once told that Ducatis were originally painted with nitrocellulose lacquer. Can anyone confirm this and are any restorers using lacquers these days (either nitrocellulose or acrylic)? My goal is to make this restoration reasonably accurate. Thanks.
