Just got the headlight brackets and bushes off the fork tube. Brackets are not the wire type, but the triangular sheet metal.
I notice that only one bush had any evidence of lube. I am guessing, due to the bit of struggle in removal, that they should be lubed, both in the bracket where they sit, and inside the bush where they ride on the fork tube. I assume this because of the bit of struggle getting them off, and the presence of rust deposit on the bush and bracket hole.
Question: lube or no lube?
If lube, and recommendation on what type to so that will not corrupt the bush material?
If lube, I'm thinking of using silicone spray lubricant, which is compatible with most auto window mouldings, and used to eliminate squeaks.
The bushes are surprisingly supple, and they only took a bit of effort to clean up, so I hope to re-use them, but before re-assembling, would appreciate any wisdom here.
Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Richard

Hi Richard - any rubber cleaner will do a nice job of lubing the stuff to install. I use Maguire's #40 for this job.

Just a question: is liquid dish soap/soapy water a good or bad way to go for rubber lube/dressing?

never tried it but suspect it would be a temp lube for assembly only, if anything.
So would spit.

yeah, agreed. When I owned my hot rod & restoration shop, I went through cases of their products, this as well as their waxes for paint. I only used stuff that really worked...
