Darmah tank size

Post by AndyCapp »

My 1980 SSD tank is full of filler under the paint, so I found a good condition Red/White Darmah tank and had it repainted.
I tried to fit it yesterday and could not even get the front to fit over the two frames tubes. On comparing the two
tanks (oooops, yes, I know I should have done this before painting ......) mine is quite a bit taller and very, very slightly
wider at the front. Well, there you are - not all Darmah fuel tanks are the same.

You sure You got a Darmah tank ?
I just measured my two 1978s and the are both identical, even the "dents" on the inside.
The 350/500 SD tanks are similar of design and shape, but a narrower and smaller.
It should fit on a Pantah frame though :-). Time to buy another Ducati !

They look the same. The difference in internal width is very subtle. Length is identical. My tank is about 2cm higher.
It came with standard 900 Darmah Red & White (isn't the shape & white stripe on a 500 quite different?)
I have a photo of the two - is there an easy way to share it ?

Problem solved.
A bit of persuasion (ok, a hammer) to open out the base of the tank inside and it now fits. Guess I forgot to take into account
Italian manufacturing practices of the period. Probably no two tanks are exactly the same
