The gasket between the bowl and the body (rubber o-ring) is just to seal them from dust coming in. The correct level isn't high enough to reach it.
It's the seal of the little bowl (or the drilled bolt) that is mos probably leaking.

ah, good to know! Thank you. I'll replace that seal and see how it goes.

I took teh bowl off, cleaned up the copper gasket on the bolt that holds it on, reassembled, and it's all fine. Thanks for the help everyone, much appreciated. Soon I might even take it for a ride.

went to start it today, and darn it all, there's fuel pouring out of the front carby now! Time for another needle and seat I guess.
