Perhaps the problem is with the aluminum tubes. From my experience the standard steel tubes work well.

Re: Won't idle
My SS with 40s wouldn't idle either until I replaced the valve seals and the two exhaust valves, put in new piston rings, replaced the rear cylinder camshaft which had been scored because a closing rocker was too tight, readjusted the valve gaps and synchronized the carbs. Now it idles nicely. Somet...

There was a couple on EBay a few weeks ago. They're not cheap though.

Re: '78 900ss wheels - question.
You will have to go through the SS parts book to get the correct hubs, bearings, spacers etc. as these were the only models that used both wire-spoked and cast wheels. You can reuse the cush drive/rear sprocket holder. If you are keeping the bigger rear disc you will need an adapter to mount the dis...

Re: Various twin parts
I could be interested in the throttle assembly if it's chrome and in good condition and possibly the gasket set as well. Send me a pm with the details and a photo if you don't mind.

Re: Early vs "Late" 1975 860GT
I'm not sure what early or late means but according to my 860GT workshop manual the alternator changed from 150 to 200 watts at engine number 851684. There was also a changed engine stop relay at the same engine number with the date given as 20 May, 1975.

Re: Darmah Sidestand
The 860GT side stand doesn't support the bike very well. You may regret fitting one.

Recommended size Pirelli Sport Demons on my early '79 900SS with standard rim widths ie the wider rear rim. I like them a lot.

Re: Suggestions for freeing frozen Brembo pistons
I've had success moving the pistons by removing a brake pad and pumping the brake lever while the caliper is still mounted on the fork with the wheel and brake in place. You can place a shim between the piston and the brake disk so that the piston doesn't pop out all the way. Repeat the procedure fo...

Re: 860GT head nut wrench and torque setting
The tool I've used for years is a 16 mm open/closed-ended wrench with a socket welded to the middle appropriate to the size of the torque wrench. I seem to recall that the factory tool uses a similar set-up. Works well although you may have to shave down the sides of the wrench to access the cylinde...

Re: Refitting cylinder head - valve timing problems
I'm having a hard time understanding what you are doing. If you were only taking off the horizontal cylinder head you should have aligned the dots, removed the head and then realigned the dots when replacing the head. There was no need to worry about the vertical cylinder. Having said that the cylin...

D'accord Kev. That gives me plenty of time to line up a bike. I'm just putting mine away for the winter but you can come over anytime between May and October. I live in a beautiful area with lots of good roads.

Re: how many 860 gte's...
A friend had a red '75 860GT with electric start. Unlike the photo it had a single disk up front and the standard rear upturned saddle. The starting system didn't really work as it couldn't turn over a cold motor. The bike ended up in Australia.

Re: Spaggiari leaning it over
I thought the Aussie joke name for women was Sheila not Shirley. In any case I've spent lots of time with people from down under. The ski hills in western Canada are full of them during winter and I've traveled with a fair few in my several years spent in Europe. I've joked that I've come back home ...

Need a Canadian along? I could be up for that - I've been thinking about a trip to France as my french is getting rusty. The Pyrenees are on my favourite places list.
