New spokes and rims on 1975 860GT

FYI, Just in the finishing process of putting new spokes and Excel rims (from Buchanan Spoke and Rim) on my 1975 860GT: Pics are on this Flickr link: https://www.flickr.com/photos/124760992@N02/albums/72157680407126538 All went together nicely. The front hub was very easy, and the spokes, once in th...

Re: Disc rear end

Hi Ducadini, No harm; I appreciate the info, and am grateful that I counted correctly. I haven't ordered yet, as I am awaiting a reply from Buchanan having asked for pics of the finish on the Excels, with and without polishing. I am still trying to decide on anodizing or not, but Buchanan may not do...

Re: Disc rear end

Hi Ducadini, I just noticed this post in my wanderings. You say that the original 860GT hub was drilled for 36 spokes with drum brake, and 40 for disc. I counted my 860GT bike's (s/n 851539) front wheel and rear wheel spoke holes twice, and both the front and the rear hubs have 40 holes, and that's ...

Re: Need rim info for 1975 Ducati 860GT

Thanks, Ducadini, With the amount of effort and bucks I have put into the resto, I am leaning toward getting the Excel rims polished by Buchanan, and then dealing with keeping them clean. The bike is always garaged, and the worst thing I have seen on other polished aluminum bike parts on my other on...

Re: Need rim info for 1975 Ducati 860GT

Hi Steve, Here's the specific info on the Excel Rims, clipped right from the Buchanan catalog: I am assuming that when you say "Flanged", you mean "Shouldered". I will be contacting Buchanan soon to order spokes and rims, and will attempt to get clear-anodized and polished rims (...

Re: Need rim info for 1975 Ducati 860GT

Looking at Buchanan Excel Rim options, the only option I see is the labor for polishing; there is no mention of clear coating. There is mention of anodized coating which gives the old silver finish, but that doesn't sound like a clear coat. Again, is it your understanding that they do provide clear ...

Re: Need rim info for 1975 Ducati 860GT

Hi again, Steve, When you mention "polished with a clear coat", I understand that Buchanan has a rate for the polishing process, but I see no clear coating listed; does that mean that you or I do the clear coating ourselves? Not an issue for me, but I want to be clear. Thanks in advance. R...

Re: 860GT Rear Wheel Drum Brake Spacer Quest for Clarification

Hi Craig,

Thanks for the sketch.

The first three pics should clarify things:

the spacer sitting nicely on the sprocket carrier bearing
the spacer and sprocket carrier bearing
the axle with spacer.

HTH.

Re: 860GT Rear Wheel Drum Brake Spacer Quest for Clarification

Hi Craig, Thanks for the sketch. In reality, even the small hole in the spacer slides nicely over the axle's larger, unthreaded part, so the spacer will slide right up the axle against the sprocket carrier's inner race. whilst the other face would rest against the swingarm face. The difference in ax...

Re: 860GT Rear Wheel Drum Brake Spacer Quest for Clarification

Hi Craig, The threaded part of the axle is indeed a slightly smaller diameter than the unthreaded length. The threaded parts are only about an inch long, and just protrude out of the swingarm to provide enough threads to nicely contain the large nut and washer on each side. The small bore on the spa...

Re: 860GT Rear Wheel Drum Brake Spacer Quest for Clarification

Gentlemen, I may have deduced the answer to my question and hoisted on my own petard as a result. The "mystery" piece, now likely identified as #185 in the infamous 860GT parts manual, has an outside diameter that exactly matches the outside of the inner race of the sprocket bearing(s). Th...

Re: 860GT Rear Wheel Drum Brake Spacer Quest for Clarification

Hi Ducadini, The spacers that go in between the two triangular spaces is established; they each meet perfectly with the flats that the bearings sit against, thus they will properly function. The large spacer (# 190) sits between the brake drum and the swingarm. No spacers of mine have any threaded e...

Re: 860GT Rear Wheel Drum Brake Spacer Quest for Clarification

Thanks again, Craig, # 185 may well be the mystery spacer. Too bad the picture of it in the parts manual is so mediocre; it certainly doesn't show a counterbore, even though it could well be that way. When I disassembled the bike thirty years ago, I kept the pieces loosely grouped by category (engin...

Re: 860GT Rear Wheel Drum Brake Spacer Quest for Clarification

Thanks for the comments, Gentlemen. Craig, I had forgotten the term "counterbore" as I had not used the process or such a piece of hardware for a long time. Vince, I am the original owner of the bike, bought it new, and there were never any wheel swaps. There have been some anomalies elsew...

Re: 860GT Rear Wheel Drum Brake Spacer Quest for Clarification

Hi Craig, Yeah, I have to agree. I have the two spacers that fit correctly between the two sets of bearings, and the sleeve as it's called in the Haynes, is called a bush in the 860 parts manual (yes, it would be a real nightmare to thread the axle without that sleeve holding the spacer in location)...
