Dave, I don`t know where I picked up the information about old bearings, or if it is anymore than an old wives tale, but unless every part is checked & OK I will not feel happy. 25 years of storage in uncertain conditions has to have caused some internal damage as well as perishing every oil seal. I...

Cheers for the cheerfull scenarios. What has got me thinking that the big ends will need replacing now [rather than very rapidly in the future!] is the tendency of ball & roller bearings to mark their tracks when they are left sitting in one position for a long time [25 years]. The minute indentation...

I know the motor has got to be stripped, just keeping my expectations low & hoping there are decent cams, pistons, bores & gearbox. Anything else will be a bonus but the weather has got to improve before I make a move into the garage & start pulling it apart! The 10/20000 mile suggestion didn`t come ...

The previous owner had the engine rebuilt about 1500 miles before bending a valve & putting it into the back of the shed for 25 years. If the motor hasn`t suffered from internal corrosion I should have a good starting point. The magnetic dipstick sounds like a sensible idea, I`ve used a magnetic dra...

Thanks guys, I felt like I had dropped into a parallel universe where I was going to spend more on bearings than petrol.

900GTS big end life

I`m just starting to feel my way into rebuilding a cosmetically trashed 900gts & have talked to a couple of UK suppliers about parts availability & ballpark figures for costs. What suprised me was to be told to expect a big end life of between 10,000 & 20,000 miles, is this a reasonable figure? The ...

Thanks for your help Craig, the Waters site has given me some ideas to explore. I`m going with the black alloy tank & will start looking for a suitable seat.

The seat is from my North, I was just trying to get a sense of what it looked like with the big tank & small seat.

The Trident paintwork is stripped & a new catflap has been inserted in the back door; I am now relaxed. Yes, those are my pictures [there were a couple of others that showed the engine & forks] & I am very impressed that you managed to extract them. Looking at the site again it seems that the "load ...

Yes I can see them, I just can`t transfer them to my gallery. They are all in amongst the publicly viewable images for Nov 14. I`ve spent a couple of hours trying to move or reload but to no avail. Its probably my lack of practice & can only get easier. I shall now go & strip paint off a Trident unt...

Nowt there

This is proving to be a steep learning curve. I have all the photos on a hosting site but making anything further happen is testing my patience. Thanks for your advice, unfortunately there are no headlight fittings & no starter relay. If ever I get these photos posted you`ll have a better idea of wh...

900GTS

Thanks Craig. Unfortunately I don`t have any original bodywork, just frame, engine & forks. There are twin discs & it looks as though a starter motor was mounted. On the other hand I suppose the same basic casings would have been used for both E/S & non E/S models? When my brother bought the bike it...

900 GTS?

I`ve taken some photos & will post them soon. In the meantime can anyone use this frame number to confirm that I do have a 900GTS & give me theyear of manufacture? I am guessing about 1978. DM860S852006 Thanks. Kerrin
