Re: 1978 900SS Konking out

I have an 82 SS that had a tricky electrical issue some time back. Symptoms were a little different but the area is worth a look all the same. The wiring loom that went from my stator up to my Bosch boxes had turned to mush. Basically the insulation went bad and the wires were no longer insullated f...

Re: top end noise

I`ve got one of those gear gazer windows on mine. Friends rekon it`s a bit of a wank but it`s a good way to see you`ve got some oil flow happening. Interseting to note that on my two bikes oil flow is fairly slow to make it up to the back pot when you stop them and re-start when they are hot. Both h...

Re: Carbon be gone

This post is a little old but this is worth mentioning on this topic. The tale is not about a bike as such but crosses over. I work as a Marine diesel mechanic and recently had an instance of a gentleman who had purchased a small 3 cylinder diesel Yanmar engine in his boat. The engine had done littl...

Re: Engine "rattle"

I have an 860GTS that I rebuilt a lot of years ago and set the crank end float to zero. Some years later and quite a few km`s (not sure of the exact amount but maybe 20-30,000km`s it developed end float again. Around .015mm or .006". The shims showed no sign of distress. I wondered if the prima...

octane

I use the 98 0ctane fuel and a good quality upper cylinder lubricant/lead substitute aditive in my 82 SS. To be honest I rekon all vehicles would benifit from upper cylinder lubricant. Remember Redex??? Was all the rage in the old days...........but I digress. I have run lower octane, 91 and 95 and ...

clutch cover

Not sure if new or re-pro or oil filler or no or over priced or fair. I am but a humble messenger passing on info. Just know they are Bosch ignish. The earlier ones are way more and heaps rarer due to being sought after by GTS owners getting rid of the electric leg. Email them on [email protected].com.a...

WA bevels

I bought my first bevel from Claremont in Perth in 1984 and have been hooked ever since. Reason I mention is it seems the bevel population in the West seems stronger than in the Eastern states. Good to see the Conti sonata is still playing..........

Gauges are most probably Veglia, in my humble opinion the better of the 2 used. Not that up on round cases but on square cases the speedo is driven by a tang off the front whee.l On square cases that tang can break off or bend out. It is easy to see if you look down at the cable end. It`s worth disc...

oil leak

If the SSD oil filter is the same as all the rest of the square cases and I think it is, that is, not a spin on, make sure the centre post that the filter fits to is screwed down. The center post that the filter fits over can be removed and if it is loose the oil filter cover will sit higher and not...

valve clearance

Not sure how your going about checking your valve clearances but I made up a very simple tool that incorporates a dial indicator for the closing rocker. I found feeler gauges to be fiddly and not that accurate. The tool is basically a bit of flat bar, the dial fits onto a smal spigot and it srews do...

Yeah that is strange. I use 10W in mine and they work fine. There was an issue with 2 different publications giving 2 different amounts. From memory one said 230 and one said 270ml. I do remember I went with the higher figure. More is better right?????? Point I`m trying to make is there is none of t...
