Re: New carbs - where to start...

No, still waiting for any suggestions. I did change to a K4 needle, 65 idle and AB265 atomiser. The rear runs perfect. The front is still unhappy. Once warm the revs will not remain constant. Can idle between 1000rpm and 2500 without my intervention. I did take it for a 20 minute spin and it was fin...

Re: My base settings for 36mm PHF Dellortos SD Darmah

Greetings from Christchurch, NZ I too have a 1981 SD900 that I am converting to a pair of Steve's 36mm Dellortos. It sounds like you had the grief I'm having now. I can get the bike to fire up, with the chokes on, every time, no problem. It doesn't seem to matter how long I warm it up as soon as i c...

Re: New carbs - where to start...

Not so fast....I'm still bothered. I went back to work after several attempts to get the bike to idle properly with no luck. Back now and still not having any luck. The carbs as supplied by Steve are as follows: Main 130 Idle 50 Choke 70 Slide 60/3 Needle K18 3rd notch I've checked all these myself ...

Re: Won't idle

Greetings from the land of the long white cloud. I too am having an almost identical problem. I just can't get the bugger to idle, or respond to the mixture screws. To add to my woes the bike will change rpm, up and down, on its own while its idling. I'm guessing I've got an intake leak somewhere. I...

It's working...

I'll post the details soon. Simple but very valuable lesson learnt. I knew it was something simple...

I'm now mobile. Many thanks Macten and Eternally Troubled.

Re: New carbs - where to start...

Ok. I'm lost now. I listened to you all and decided I would follow Steve's tuning guide exactly. I pulled the carbs off, checked the exhaust gaskets, loosened the cable tensioned, wound out the idle screw, wound in and then backed out 1.5 turns the mixture screw and then pressed the button. Nothing....

Re: New carbs - where to start...

Hi Kev, Nice to chat again. Firstly thanks so much for your help in the past and for the advice this time. I had another brief look at it today. When I tried to start it this time only the front cylinder would fire. When I gave it a few revs there was a lot of back firing and flames from the rear cy...

New carbs - where to start...

The scenario... 1981 SD 900. 2nd oversized Pistons Good battery New cables Brand new PHF36mm Dellorto carbs I've got the bike back together fine. The carbs were fitted as delivered from Steve. After allowing the fuel to run into carbs for a minute or so I opened the chokes on both, gave the throttle...

Throttle Cable Route

Greetings, I've bought a couple of Steve's phf 36mm carbs plus the cables. I'm trying to fit them to the bike and I have a question. How do the cables route from the handlebars to the carbs? I can't follow the old olds as they came from a set of clip one and were too short. It was a bugger fitting t...

Re: 1981 SD900 Darmah - Restoration Project

Definitely not the starter button, but a good suggestion nonetheless. I know this because I've now had it apart and my worst fears have been confirmed. I know I'm going to get some serious flak over this but the sprag has gone for the third time in less than 12 months. Before the abuse starts rollin...

Re: 1981 SD900 Darmah - Restoration Project

New fuel taps arrived today. Fitted. No leaks, great. Now it won't start again.... I checked the fuel progression to the carbs. No worries there. It's firing on the rear cylinder but not on the front. I pulled the plug. It was wet and oily. I cleaned it and checked the gap. All good at 0.6mm. I trie...

Re: 1981 SD900 Darmah - Restoration Project

Update...... I am now road legal. It sailed through without so much as a cough. Why no smilie? I can't get from second to third gear and even first to second is a struggle. I'm guessing having read a few posts on transmission problems, is that the selector spring is slack. It doesn't sound like a ma...

No, thank YOU Kev! You and the other great contributors to this forum make the whole job so much more manageable. I'll admit to waking up at 2 and 3 am and logging on to see if someone had left a reply to more than one of my questions. Sometimes the problems seemed to be unending. Realistically, wit...

It's off again. The starter was rooted. Well, the brushes were. They, and the armature were black. According to the mechanic (I relented and took it into the shop) it looks as though it had been arcing badly. The carbs have been balanced and set up properly. The slide screw had worn a notch into the...
