Aprilia

Hello I hope this is not an ignorant question (Google has so far failed me!) ... can someone confirm whether Aprilia (as a current manufacturer of bikes) is the same company that made the lighting systems/switches etc) on Ducatis back in the day, or is it a different company entirely? Happy to hear ...

Trip meter

Can someone please tell me where to locate the trip meter on my Veglia/Ducati speedo (1977 900ss) which shows a mileage reading not equal to the main mileage count, so there must be some way to zero it (the handbook also refers to it, but fails fully to describe where to find it). There's no trip re...

Re: 900ss rear wheel installation

Thanks Steve

So, is there something I can measure to check that the sprocket carrier assy. is in the proper location (then to be corrected as necessary) - or have I misunderstood?

Re: 900ss rear wheel installation

Thanks for your new suggestion. I've removed the wheel again (good practice?) and separated the cush drive to check what's what ... I think my original effort was OK as the alternative meant the sprocket carrier didn't neatly align with the outside face of the cush drive, the problem becoming worse....

Re: 900ss rear wheel installation

Steve,
In case it helps, having just gone out to look, here is what I can see: the 'internal' cush drive unit drive lines up exactly with the end of the main body; the outer race of the bearing lines up exactly with the steel holder/bush it is located in. Anything else I might check?

Re: 900ss rear wheel installation

Steve, I was hoping you (or someone) would say they're often like that ... but I can't think of anything I changed. The carrier bearing looks to be located as originally. My aim was only to change the chain and sprocket, refresh the cosmetics, refinish the painted spokes as original, re-zinc a few i...

Re: 900ss rear wheel installation

Steve,
No, the bearings were (are!) fine and didn't need replacement.

900ss rear wheel installation

The story so far ... I think I've noted and paid attention to the little 'features' that trap the unwary (it's just a back wheel for heaven's sake) so I now know that: - the LHS (inside, disk side) jaw is the thinner item of the four (5mm compared to 6.5mm, and on mine it is spot marked with a drill...

Re: '75 900ss screen trim question

As per my earlier post - here is another eBay auction for a NOS example of the proper screen trim: item number 170946644595 (said to be for 1977 to 1982, same seller as before but not so cheap now!). Inflation ...?

Re: '75 900ss screen trim question

I think what you're after has unfortunately just ended on eBay # 170903219981
Mine has this same trim on it, black with a central silver ('chrome') section. Sorry not see your question sooner!

Hi Sir Duke Reassuring to hear your identical experience. I'd suggest nothing went wrong - 10W is simply the wrong grade of oil. I now realise the original recommendations were indeed significantly heavier. As well as the Eke book, the 1977 Haynes manual also states Agip OSO 25 (which I understand i...

The amount shown in the 'Data Index' here is 210cc for the SD ...
FWIW my own (limited but recent) SS experience is that 10W is significantly too light; 230cc/20W seems fine, as recommended in Stephen Eke's 'Ducati Tuning' book.
Any opinions/'facts' to do with old Ducatis do seem highly variable ...

Just come across your post when researching pipe/silencer numbers etc.
I do have a good pipe stamped with 0759.84.020.
It's been on my SS from new - but it is for the front/horizontal cylinder, not the rear/vertical.

Thanks for your comments. To me it seems a damping issue, there's no excessive static 'sag' - and no problems before changing the oil. I used 230cc in each leg. How would the springs get toasted anyway? The bike has only covered 15k miles, 'never raced nor rallied' as they say. I've since noted that...

Front forks

I thought I would describe my adventures with fork oil changes on a '77 900ss. I initially tried 10W (Castrol synthetic) as suggested on the shop here (albeit Motul, not Castrol) for average weight riders (I'm under 150lb, so that's me, or so I thought!). It turned the front end into an uncontrolled...
