Re: Desmo Valve Timing
These details are all fixed and the only problem I have is knowing whether I have put the front cylinder head on correctly. (could be any of four camshaft positions where the half-shafts match to allow the head to go on) It can be seen from this that the drive shaft will line up with its mating ton...

Re: Desmo Valve Timing
Do you have the original Bosch ignition?
If you do you have some wire replacing to do or maybe go with a new Sachse ignition.

If you really want to understand cam timing it would be hard to beat this.

Re: Desmo Valve Timing
Afraid I never paid attention to details like valves opening when rotating from all timing marks lined up.
All the gears are keyed to their shafts so if the timing marks are all lined up, that's it.

Re: Desmo Valve Timing
That all sounds right to me.
Rear piston at TDC, front piston on its way down and all the timing marks lined up, turn the crankshaft 6 revolutions and all timing marks lined up again.

Re: Desmo Valve Timing
I was working on posting this when the forum went missing. Not written by me but I saved it from a forum and have been using it. BEVEL DRIVE CAMSHAFT TIMING GEARS AND ALIGNMENT MARKS August 1980 By Peter Shearman The timing marks on a bevel drive engine, are only all lined up once every six engine r...

Re: Better Oil Flow to the Sump, And filter ALL of the oil.
3 years plus of nuthin but crickets chirping, its time for an update! By the end of the riding season 2019 I was having some hip pain that was making riding uncomfortable and just walking was painful. Physical therapy didn't help so I was just getting used to living with the pain. Spring of 2020 I d...

Re: Trouble mating the 860 crankcase halves
The kickstart shaft has to be rotated 45° while sliding cases together for the ratchet lug to engage the stop. It's easier to check crank end play with just the crank in the cases. Check that your bearings slide on the crank without being too tight. They also have to slide into the steel case housin...

Re: Better Oil Flow to the Sump, And filter ALL of the oil.
Temperature reached 50° today so I went for a 30 mile ride. Probably one of the last for this year. Total on the engine since rebuild and start up back in May is 6861 nearly trouble free miles. Had some oil push past the head o-rings that was fixed by moving the head oil restrictors and the dry clut...

Re: Rotor Rust Dust
I agree, big mistake. Girlfriend has a 71 Commando that I like to tear around on.
They're a bit more common than MHR's so you could maybe find another.

Check your pins and pads
This last spring I noticed one of the caliper pins on the SS was hanging out a bit more than it should. I popped the cover off and found that the small center pin was rattling around on top of the rotor and pads! Checked the fronts and found a pad had sheared off the steel backing plate but ...

Re: Rotor Rust Dust
Yeah, not many curvy roads in Iowa where you can lean it over, or on the Interstate for that matter! I think that front Avon has over 12,000 miles on it now from the last 2 or 3 years, can see some cracks down in the treads. My bikes are indoor temp controlled also, that hot and cold with humidity i...

Rotor Rust Dust
Rode to the Barber Vintage Festival last weekend, the bike sat out in the rain one night and the rotors rusted. The first time you use the brakes a cloud of rust dust flies off and the result made for a cool pic I thought. https://i.imgur.com/dSjEAaf.jpg Was a good ride except for being caught in a ...
