Re: New Member from Virginia, USA - '78 900SD

Hi Matt, Welcome to the Forum. Interesting story, interesting bike. I don't recognise the exhaust-silencer combo, so can't help you with that. But looking at it, I can see why no-one would want it on a street bike. Contis are already loud enuf ... You should definitely do the valve clearances, prefe...

Re: '78 darmah sd - what's this noise?

Sorry Doug, but as Steve reported, your links are returning 404 or other errors. I can confirm that you should have the washer on the selector shaft. The fact you don't means this isn't the first time this part of the engine has been opened, and by somebody who wasn't as careful as he might have bee...

Re: dashboard wiring issue? generator and headlight indicator lights always on

Yes. It's most probably the voltage sensor. These were made by Motoplat and are renowned for their unreliability. They work by sensing the voltage at the battery. When this goes below 12.35 volts, on comes the light. (This is why the bulb lights up when the engine is idling with the headlight on - t...

Re: '78 darmah sd - what's this noise?

Hi Doug, 1. Don't use sealant on Bevels. It's the modern way, I know. But there's no need, and can often lead to grief. Use gaskets. But you know that ... now ;) 2. To get the cover off, start by tapping it all around the edge with a hide mallet. Hopefully this will break the sealant at at least one...

Re: 50th Birthday Ducati - Call out to Euro Bevelheads

<snip> Thanks for the info Craig - why not a straight 50? No worries. "Why not a straight 50", you ask. Well, I was teasing you a bit; but more seriously, it's just that oil technology has move on so much since the 1970s. And remember: as early as March 1976, Ducati themselves recommended...

Re: 50th Birthday Ducati - Call out to Euro Bevelheads

If you feel you really MUST use a straight 50 weight oil (and even if you don't ... :) ) Contact Peter Clark at Ducati Montpellier. Peter is the chef d'atelier there. He's a Kiwi, so speaks a form of English ... ;) He also knows a thing or two about our old lumps (he used to work at Motoddd Laverda ...

Re: Parts required. 1965 100cc Mountaineer

Welcome to the Forum, Marco. I see you're a man who likes a challenge ... 8) For parts, I suspect it's gonna be either the USA or Italy. But in neither case will it be easy. You're probably going to be looking at buying bikes to break, rather than individual parts. Try Facebook and see what response...

Re: 650SS Alazzurra ignition coils

Hi Bill The specified value for the primary (low tension) side of 40 ohms can't be correct - even tho' I too see it in the factory manual, written there in black and white! 4 ohms would be more like it. So your measured value of 5.5 ohms seems a tad high. But this may be a reflection of the accuracy...

Re: 900 SS rear axle length and diameter

The part numbers say 'No': GTS & Darmah: 0960 80 470. SS/MHR: 0797 80 470. (By way of explanation: The first 4 digits indicate the model on which the part was first used, even if it was also later used on subsequent models. This rule works most of the time, but I am aware of certain anomalies. T...

Re: PHM40 Synching Query

Not sure what you mean by "hanging". If you mean, might one cable be taut while the other has some slack in it, then yes. That's what you take out with the cable adjusters, with the aim being that both slides start to rise at the same time, regardless of their respective start positions. P...

Re: PHM40 Synching Query

<snip> I'm now wondering whether I should raise the front slide slightly .... (which) will also mean that the slides will be slightly out of synch, though lifting together. Can one slide be slightly higher than the other when resting on the adjusting screws? This will, of course, mean a discrepancy...

Re: '66 250 Scrambler fork questions

Otherwise, Clymer published several reprints of the factory manual. Copies of these tend to be more easily found - ebay and the like. They typically look like this (see the Clymer name at bottom left): Clymer orange cover v2.jpg (There are 2 further editions, but for the sake of brevity I shall refr...

Re: '66 250 Scrambler fork questions

Also:
The correct original factory workshop manual for your bike looks like this:
Manual.jpg

Or this (a reprint):
Factory late reprint grey cover.jpg

Just be aware there was an earlier factory manual which does not cover your bike. It has a blue cover:
Factory early.jpg
To be continued ...

Re: '66 250 Scrambler fork questions

As Steve, Erik. You just need to block the rod from turning. So either 'surprise' it by using an impact gun. Or fashion up what Ducati called a "suitable T wrench". Here's the Ducati illustration of the "suitable T-wrench". Not very helpful, it has to be said. That fork manual yo...
