Re: Ducati 860 GTS 1975 - Help!

Our experience with the old Ducati Elletronica ignition is : when it works, it works. First thing to go is the low-rev part : difficult starting because it's running on one cylinder until revs go over 2k, then the "defect" ignition kicks back in. No problem for racing :-D . The moment both...

Re: Advice on a GTL 500

Our first Ducati was a SD500. Best steering bike till now (still have to rebuild the F3/F1). As You said : those parallel twins had some issues so after two years we bought a Darmah. Current userbike is a US Paso 750. Not daily, but at least a tank/week. If it wasn't so bloody difficult to work on (...

Re: Ducati 860 GTS 1975 - Help!

You're sure Your timing's "on the dots" ? Rather easy to check behind the covers on top of the bevels. Remember it could take some turns to align. You're sure You plugged the correct cylinders ? Remember this engine turns backwards. And of course : RTFM. have fun, we did on ours ciao ducad...

Re: Fluid quantity for Rear Marzocchi - 1973 750 GT

@Peter : Ducaccino was asking for the rear shockabsorbers. @ Ducaccino : did a "quick" search through our manuals but apart from the rebuild of the separate reservoir Marzocchi : nothing else on rebuilding earlier stuff. Just a mention that they should be overhauled every 30-40K. If nothin...

Re: Pantah 500 Carbies

Before You start filing away : does anybody have acces to the measurements of 32 Dell'Orto slides ? IIRC (they are TOO difficult to get to now) they have the same diameter, and there could be different cutaways. In the partslist of the 650 Alazzurra, the USA part has indeed less cutaway than the EU ...

Re: Restoration almost complete. Won’t start

Unless You've done something VERY extraordinary, Your bike HAS electronic ignition. But switch two near identical wires from the pickup and trouble starts. Follow the manual and everything should work. Don't forget a bevel crank spins backwards.

Re: darmah - leaky 36mm dell'orto carb (and headlight reflector repair?)

If You had the bike with closed petcocks for a longer time, carb may have been gummed a bit. Flowing gas may have cleaned some debri away. A lot of assumptions but try to empty them before putting it away, unless You ride it very regularly. BTW : when You have the contact ON and You push the killswi...

Re: Clearance between desmo opening rockers

Yes Andy, we're only discussing the sideways play. IIRC (familytime now so garage is off-limits) You should have about 1 mm to play with those closing rockers without interference with the valvestem. If this isn't enough, I would grind a bit of the sideway shim-side of the rocker, NOT the part that ...

Re: Pantah 500 Carbies

the original Dell'Orto PFH 36 AD & AS carbies are playing up big time on my Pantah 500SL. So did they work fine before ? I have cleaned them and replaced obviously worn parts and rebuilt them. What are "obviously worn parts"? I am considering replacing them as the plug keep getting fo...

Re: Clearance between desmo opening rockers

Fitting the cam without tightening it (just enough to compress the shims), then shim the closers, then the openers (just sideways, valveplay comes later). If needed You can always shim the camshaft a bit more out or in (and then the closers and openers). And yes, it can be close in some heads, we th...

Re: Rear brake linkages - 900ss

Weren't these M7 AND left or right threaded ??
I dumped those, replaced them with ball/head couplings and aluminium bars.
Kept the original ones buried deep.

Re: Intro

Not even a (printed) partslist was published so originality of GF parts is always a point of discussion. Sure hope that (if it is a genuine GF) all parts are there. Otherwise : caveat emptor. As Craig said, the GF (or better 1974 SS) was only 401 (or 411) times assembled, so roughly 800 still exist ...

Re: 860GT Clutch Basket play , excessive?

Better change the bearings, when getting of the line the primary puts some sideload on the basket and it could rub against the crankcase.

Re: 860 GT Sticky Clutch

Steve and Craig already pointed to the possible things. Also check if the grooves of the basket and inner drum aren't too damaged. Easy to spot : they have to be smooth, not dented. Otherwise the plate(s) can get stuck and suddenly jump free, giving the feeling like You mentioned. I tried to avoid r...

Re: 1980 Darmah Carb Tuning

The difference between the #250 and the #300 is just 0.5 mm , thus the latter is giving more flow.
Unless You're flat-out, not much difference for a bevel.
Of course float-hight has to be checked.
