Thanks. Apart from using a lathe I borrowed to do the foot pegs everything else was done at home. Unfortunately circumstances have changed somewhat and I now need to get something I can use for daily commuting so it’s on ebay at the moment. It’s something I hate doing and I wish I could find an alte...

I can’t offer any personal experience; it just doesn’t get cold where I live. But from the other oil thread and some engine oil manufacturers use lists 20w50 would suit and is fairly common. It also appears that synthetics are OK, and these might be a better option when using multi grade oils. I not...

Sorry I can’t help with a specific answer, I just don’t know if they have a common problem in this area and I have never experienced it on my bike. All I can do is explain what you will need to look for. I will assume that you have checked the shift mechanism and this is OK. Basically there could be...

Airmale, I have enjoyed the discussion; it has provided some interesting reading and a range of thoughts regarding engine oil. There is a site that has wear tests of different oil on it, but I have lost the link and have been too busy to try and chase it up. They ran the same engine on a dyno in the...

Re: oil

Hi again everyone, Thanks to Colin and others for the great links and lots of interesting reading. After doing lots of this, my only question is ,” Why the heck are you guys using straight weight oil”? The best reason I’ve read to date, is that someone else recommended it. In all this reading, the ...

With regard to high detergent oils. One aspect other than the particulate suspending properties that may hinder their effect is their ability to foam. Engine oils do have an anti foaming agent, but with the bevels high volume of flow and GTX's higher level of detergent additives there could still be...

When it comes to oil shear I would suggest that the gearbox would have a much higher effect on this than the bevel drive system. This is also why I prefer the mono grade oil, mono’s tend to be more stable in their viscosity in this environment while multi grades can loose half their viscosity in a v...

I've just finished rebuilding it.

I made the mistake of dropping my bike last year, so it’s been out of action for a while. I had to strip all the bodywork off and repair and paint it, make some new foot pegs and controls and change the left crank case cover. I thought I would take the opportunity to give the engine a freshen up and...

I would be expecting to see more iron sludge than normal after a rebuild as everything beds in. That doesn’t change the fact that you are right regarding the need for regular oil changes. With the viscosity loss due to the shearing action of the gears, and the build up of acids in the oil brought on...

I modified a three leg puller. It has worked fine so far, but I would not like to place it under a lot of load.

My 78 GTS has just started fouling spark plugs quite often. A new one will last about 40 klm, if I clean it it may go for another few kilometres. When I fit the new plug the bike will blow heaps of blue smoke for a little while, then clear up. On a recent ride, a mate told me my bike was a little sm...

Re: follow up

the por stuff seems to be working great, no more stuck carbs, an dthe bubbling on the tank seems to have stabilized. That’s great to hear. I might need some myself if our nations illustrious leader has his way. He wants to include up to 5% ethanol in fuel without any labelling. He has been trying t...
