Re: Sync beavel gear

Magnus - it sounds like you have it figured out. Just remember you have to press down on the closing rockers to take up the spring pressure before you can get an accurate measurement.

Re: Sync beavel gear

Hi Magnus, The valves should be adjusted with each piston at top dead centre on the compression stroke. I don't look at the dots on the bevel gears, all you need is to have both valves fully closed. Rotate the engine a few times to get a feel for it. Setting the clearances can be a bit tricky so go ...

Re: Sync beavel gear

I don't think you have to worry about the alignment of the bottom bevel gears. If the vertical cylinder is at top dead centre, the dots on the upper bevel gears are aligned and the shaft couplings fit together then install the cylinder head. There should then be only one way that everything will lin...

Re: New victim in Phoenix AZ (continued from the INTRO section)

That's a pretty serious seizure. It seems odd to me that both pistons would have the same damage on the sides but as far as I can tell no sign of overheating on the crowns. What do the spark plugs look like? Is the oil level correct in the crankcase? Is the crankcase filter correctly located in it's...

Re: New victim in Phoenix AZ

It's not too difficult to put new liners in the cylinders if you can still get them. I did it years ago on an 860GT with minimal tools and mechanical experience. That bike had experienced major problems with the rear pot. Are the valves opening and closing when they're supposed to. Do the cam timing...

Been to Nakusp many times (the road between Kaslo & New Denver is the best road in BC IMOH).
The east side of Kootenay Lake down to Creston isn't bad either nor is the highway from Vernon to Nakusp.

Missing BC,

Re: Won't idle

Retuned and balanced my bikes 40mm carbs using a Morgan Carbtune. At least for the time being I now have a reliable idle albeit at about 2000 revs. Not sure how the guys on Youtube get their big carbed dukes to idle like a harley.

Re: Won't idle

Agreed, but it seems that the bike starts only when I can give the carbs a few squirts via the accelerator pumps. That's because they're compensating for a problem elsewhere in the carbs*, Herb. So, even if you do get the pumps working and the bike started, you're still going to have to strip and r...

Re: 860GT valve seal confusion

I use a dentist tool to pick out the old o-rings which I changed after my SS had been in use for more than 30 years. I greased the valves so they slid in quite easily without cutting the seals. Result, no more exhaust smoke which formerly was quite apparent at idle.

Re: What's wrong with this picture?

My SS didn't even have holes drilled for mounting the lead seals although I have subsequently wired the exhaust nuts on after having problems with them loosening. I'm sure the 860GT I once owned didn't have them either. I would be surprised if that seal was fitted at the factory.

Re: 860GT base gasket question

I doubt the paper base gasket was glued on, probably just got stuck on as the cylinder head was torqued down and by the passage of time. I've always just fitted the gaskets dry, making sure that the oil passages aren't obstructed. Never heard of a copper base gasket.

Re: 860GT valve seal confusion

My early '79 SS has the o-ring valve seals. I've read that the guides with both top hat and o-ring seals were fitted beginning in 1981. Contrary to some things I've read the valve stems have tapered heads so they slide more easily into the guides without cutting the o-rings. Not really all that diff...
