It's an oil question, Jim, but not as we know it
Found a stash at my parent's place of some unopened 5 litre containers of BP Corse 50 (mineral oil meant "for racing use" only) that I always used to use. It's been stored undisturbed in the garage at temps between 10-30 deg C. Not that I'm considering using it, but out of curiosity is the...

Re: 1978 900SS - solo seat upholstery design
G'day ozzie I had a seat for my 750 GT restored by Tony O'Connor of Eldorado Motorcycle Seats. Fantastic job, great attention to detail and excellent workmanship. Might be worth getting in touch if you are after a concourse quality seat. I saw this on eBay recently: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISA...

Re: Introduction Charlies Duck
G'day Joe, Lucky you - great friend and great bike. I was given a 1974 Ducati GT (750) ... been trying to learn about these bikes .... A good starting point is Ian Falloon's book, "The Ducati 750 Bible". These are listed on eBay quite frequently at reasonable prices, and you'll also find c...

Re: 1978 900SS rebuild - oil?
Kev, I contacted Penrite seeking technical advice. I asked: Could you tell me why you state that the HPR 50 (40-70) Mineral is "Not recommended for motorcycles"? The response from a Penrite Technical Officer was: The official line is that these may be friction modified at some point in the...

Re: 1978 900SS rebuild - oil?
Thanks Kev, Rad et al. Another informative discussion. Just thought I'd let you know that the Penrite HPR 50 is an automotive oil, "Not recommended for motorcycles". See: http://www.penriteoil.com.au/engineoils-products.php?id_categ=1&id_products=6 Looks like they have some good high z...

Re: 1978 900SS rebuild - oil?
Hi John I didn't intend to start another dreaded oil thread! I am just curious to understand the reasoning behind Steve's expert and unequivocal position regarding SG rated oils. Furthermore, for the last few oil changes I have been using Castrol Edge 25-50W. But I noticed that the fine print on the...

Thanks Bern. Do you know if they were the the same weight as the Sport pistons or were they made to match the GT piston's weight?

Re: 1978 900SS rebuild - oil?
Hi Steve Use any oil as long as it is SG rated. Since you have made this recommendation several times now, I have attempted to research the issue of API oil ratings in order to better understand the significance of this aspect of oil performance, as well as the more commonly promoted properties such...

Re: Are Japanese Imports really that bad?
All the original Australian imports are now either clapped out with 80,000 km on the clock... I resisted biting before, but as the owner of a 750 GT with 88,000km on the clock (that has never been rebuilt) I would take issue with the view that bevels that have covered these sorts of distances are n...

Re: New today
Hi Shane, Congratulations on acquiring the 450 scrambler. There's nothing that looks quite like them. I've had a look at the manuals section on this site but there doesn't seem to be one for your bike. Take a look at the manuals section of DucatiMeccanica http://www.ducatimeccanica.com/ - there is a...

Re: Electric start to kick start
I'm now 52 and if I saw a (very rare) 750 GT electric start assembly, I'd be well interested in it with a view to being able to extend my Duc twin riding time in the future. And so how long do you think you've got left to enjoy your Sport Kev? That lack of an electric starter and awkward riding pos...

George,
You might find these useful: http://www.gizmology.net/sprockets.htm, http://www.dimensionsinfo.com/motorcycle-chain-sizes/
My 750 GT has 530 chain/sprockets and to the best of my knowledge most, if not all, of the bevel twins did.
Steve.

Re: '75 900ss front axle/speedo drive weirdness
My understanding is that the 23/11 drive is for a 19" front wheel such as those fitted to 750 GT and Sports. The 18" wheel of the SS uses a 20/10 drive I think. The drive is a Veglia 23/11, and, although I pulled it down a few years ago i'm fairly sure its the original part
Cheers
