Re: Advice For Kickshaft Seal Replacement
Thanks for your reply. Actually I have no tubing on the crankcase breather. I have installed a K&N filter directly to the plastic top of the breather. The filter vents to atmosphere. However I am thinking to install a reed valve between the breather and the filter to (potentially) create a sligh...

Re: Advice For Kickshaft Seal Replacement
Hi, Thanks for your reply! I actually received the same input from others on a facebook Ducati group. It worked! I made a delicate drift from a finishing nail and was able to push the old seal back far enough to make room for a new seal. This is much better than tearing things up trying to pull out ...

Advice For Kickshaft Seal Replacement
Hi, Oil seems to be seaping from the kickstart shaft of my 1975 860GT. I was first suspecting the alternator cover gasket since I had the cover off. However replacing the gasket did not resolve the leakage. I am now suspicious of the kickstart shaft seal. I have purchased a new shaft seal and a new ...

Re: Clutch Basket Bearing Recommendations? 860GT
Buying new fresh springs will give you a better starting point with even heights and full designed spring strength. The springs that worked for me were 048016550 (22Kg). Spring 079916550 (26Kg) DID NOT WORK in my application. They require a different center hub (per previous thread). I also suspect ...

Re: Clutch Basket Bearing Recommendations? 860GT
The fact that the clutch did free up somewhat when kicking over with the clutch pulled in is good news. Now it sounds like the clutch is not fully disengaging. This could be due to tilt in the pressure plate. It also could be due to insufficient lift from the longer (easy pull) clutch lever. To diag...

Re: Clutch Basket Bearing Recommendations? 860GT
Herb, Sorry to hear that the clutch is still stuck! The only two things that I can think are: 1) the clutch plates are stuck together from inactivity, or 2) something is amiss in the clutch pack assembly. Item 1 can be addressed as Ducadini recommends by pulling in the clutch and kicking through sev...

Re: Clutch Basket Bearing Recommendations? 860GT
Unfortunately neither my factory manual nor my Hayne's manual specify the torque value for the clutch spring screws. So, I just tightened by hand being careful to get them firmly seated without straining the threads. I guess one could query the Web for typical torque values of a 5mm screw in a matin...

Re: Clutch Basket Bearing Recommendations? 860GT
Herb, concerning the Brancato extended clutch arm I would leave it installed for now (if not already removed) and see how the clutch works after re-installing the original clutch springs. The problem that I had with the extended clutch arm was a slight drag (incomplete disengagement) that made it ve...

Re: Clutch Basket Bearing Recommendations? 860GT
Eureka, I have found it! Thanks to all that have contributed to this thread. I now FINALLY understand why the Heavy 0799.16.550 clutch spring did not work in my application or (likley) in Herbg's. Each of the replies to this thread added pieces that led me to my conclusion. Thanks all again! Here is...

Re: Clutch Basket Bearing Recommendations? 860GT
When I was upgrading my clutch I took several spring measurements to try and understand what was going on. I have created and attached a table of the measurements. Click on the table to view in larger size. BTW, that pressure plate looks quite strong! Ducati 860 Spring Table.jpg Both the original an...

Re: Clutch Basket Bearing Recommendations? 860GT
Hello Ducadini, You mention in your reply that you have used the "stiffer-shorter springs (originally 450 Desmo stuff) without any problems in various engines". It is interesting to note that both Herbg and myself found the Heavy(26Kg) springs to be Longer than the originals. By my measure...

Re: Clutch Basket Bearing Recommendations? 860GT
Hmm, I also had problems with the Heavy clutch springs. For some reasons (I still do not yet understand) the clutch would bind when the Heavy springs were installed and fully tightened down. It almost seemed like a coil bound condition. Basically the clutch plate would not lift unless I backed off t...

Re: Clutch Basket Bearing Recommendations? 860GT
I had a similar problem with the extended clutch arm. Although the lever force is decreased it is accomplished by a reduced throw. So the pressure plate does not lift as far as with the stock lever. I modified the clutch lever at the handle bar to slightly increase the overall travel. This did help,...

Re: New member from Perth Australia 1974 750gt
Hello Paul, Here is one option for upgrading the alternator. I did this on my early 860GT which has the same alternator as the 750. My 860 now has a Lucas Rita ignition which is not self energizing like the original 860 ignition. With the original alternator(and the RITA) my headlight would be dim a...
